As the curtains came down on Thursday’s congratulatory reception hosted by the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, the relationship between the two groups of awardees, the institution’s Track Team and the Racers Track Club moved one step further, as the Campus through the ceremony, cemented its commitment to a new phase of sporting development.
“Being a world champion, I had that in mind when I was leaving Jamaica but to run that 19. 26 (seconds), I didn’t expect that. I expected a fast time but I did not expect that but I’m grateful for everything that has happened,” said Blake on his return to Jamaica on Monday, September 19.
The stars shared the sprint titles and fastest times this year for the sprints at the 13th I.A.A.F World Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea earlier this month, with Blake winning the 100 and bolt the 200 metres. Blazing Bolt clocked 9.76 seconds at Friday’s Diamond League meet in Brussels, Belgium, the same meet where Blake, interestingly known as “The Beast” posted the second fastest 200 metre time ever, 19.26 seconds.

Merlene Ottey, former Jamaican sprint queen finished third in the women’s 100 meters at the Dubnica Athletics Meet in Slovakia on Friday. Ottey, fifty-one, clocked 11.92 seconds for 3rd in the women’s 100m ‘B’ race behind British winner Montell Douglas 11.65. France’s Christine Arron, thirty-eight, was 2nd in 11.76 seconds
Fellow regional competitors who ran the dash included Kim Collins of St. Kitts and Nevis who placed second in 10.01 seconds, Richard Thompson of Trinidad and Tobago, third, in 10.03 seconds and Jamaican, Mario Forsythe, fifth, in 10.06 seconds.

Many were hoping however, that she would compete in the 200 metre at the trials and therefore at the World Championship, especially following her victory over defending World Champion Veronica Campbell Brown at the Jamaica International Invitational in May.
Notable absentee from the team is Crisdale Mcarthy who is ranked 4th in the 100m hurdles. She is the Carifta Under-20 Champion and also won at the Junior Trials. Megan Simmonds also did not make the cut. She is ranked third in the world this year and she finished second at the trials. She was also 4th at the Youth Olympics last year.
