The Jamaican Duo of Dellan Brown and Namarie Gordon played their first game on Monday October 17th 2011, against Puerto Rico, where they went down in two sets 21- 11 and 21-13.
Serving for the first time in the capacity General Secretary, Barrett who was quite enthusiastic pointed out, “Jamaica is more known for its local and international Track and Field performance. I want to see volleyball rise… and become appreciated as much as Track and Field is. My heart’s desire is to see the day when we have our own indoor arena and state of the art facilities that can cater to regional and international audiences”.
The current JaVA elected Executive consists of President Major Warrenton Dixon, Secretary, Lawrence Nelson and Treasurer Tamika Pennicott. The elected members are complemented by a cadre of Managers, appointed to oversee various aspects of the sport’s development.
Brown believes more intensive coaching would have helped significantly. “I think we could’ve done better if we had more coaching. What we also need to work on is our fitness. The players in Cuba are all professional beach volleyball athletes; we have to juggle the sport and work.”
